Safety Saturday – Nissan Lane Departure Warning

Welcome to the third installment of Safety Saturday! Today we will be discussing another one of our Safety Shield 360 features, Lane Departure Warning. Lane Departure Warning provides a driver with both safety and convenience. It is “designed to help alert drivers to unintended movement of the vehicle out of its travel lane.” ?To put this into a real-world perspective, have you ever been driving and taken your eyes off of the road to turn your radio station? In just those few seconds, your vehicle may start to drift into the other lane or on the shoulder. With Lane Departure Warning, the system will alert you with a chime or a vibration of the steering wheel to let you know that you are moving out of your traveling lane. This vibration or chime is intended to get your attention fast so you can put your vehicle back into your traveling path. This feature is just a warning and will not take over to keep your vehicle in the lane.
The system that operates this feature is more complicated than the one for High Beam Assist. It uses a combination of a “small wide-angle camera, advanced image processing, speed sensor, and control unit” to detect a lane departure.? This feature only works if the lines for the traffic lane can be clearly seen and the vehicle is traveling more than 37 miles per hour. You may also be thinking to yourself that this feature is going to eventually get annoying by going off every time you enter a turn lane. To overcome this, Lane Departure Warning will not operate if the turn signal is activated. So, as long as you use your turn signal to move from lane to lane you will not have to deal with the chime or vibrating steering wheel.
Purchasing a new 2023 Nissan here at your local Dothan Nissan dealership, equipped with this feature, will make you a more confident driver. One of the goals that Nissan has set out to accomplish is to make all drivers confident on the road, and Lane Departure Warning is just one more step in completing that mission.
Safety Saturday’s – Nissan High Beam Assist
Hello everyone! Thank you for joining us again for another Safety Saturday. Today we will be diving into High Beam Assist. This feature, in my opinion, is one of the coolest in the Safety Shield 360®. The first time my husband drove my 2022 Nissan Sentra equipped with this feature he was amazed! So, let’s get into what makes this feature so great.
What Is It?
According to Nissan, this feature “automatically turns on the high beam headlights when you need them, and switches to low beam when it detects a vehicle ahead”. For example, say you are driving on one of the back-country roads that we have here in South Alabama. Most of those roads, if not all, don’t have street lights which makes it very hard to see everything without your high beams. With High Beam Assist, the car will recognize that the high beams are needed and automatically turn them on for you. If you happen to meet another driver also traveling that same road, the vehicle will sense their headlights and automatically turn your high beams off. Once you pass that vehicle, the high beams will turn right back on.
How Does It Work?
The way this technology works is quite simple. It “uses a front-facing ambient image sensor located near the rearview mirror” to detect light and dark. When the sensor sees that it is very dark outside, it will turn those high beams on, and when it senses the headlights of an oncoming vehicle, it will turn the high beams off. Who knew that such a small sensor could power such a convenient feature?
Why Does It Benefit You?
I know that many of you are saying to yourself, why would I even need this feature? I can turn my high beams off and on by hand. Think about this. How many times have you had your high beams on and forgot to turn them off when you saw an oncoming vehicle? I know that I certainly have and other people have done it to me as well. It would be nice to know that you have the High Beam Assist to be there to always remember to turn those high beams off to not blind the other driver coming your way.
Check out this video below for a live-action look at how High Beam Assist works:
Welcome back to another Safety Saturday here at Bondy’s Nissan. Today we will discuss the first feature in the Safety Shield 360® lineup. When most of our customers think about which safety features are the most important to them, they say that their vehicle being able to sense a crash and stop itself is at the top of their list. This is where Nissan brings in Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection.
What Is It?
Nissan defines this feature as one that “can help detect and even automatically apply the brakes if it identifies there is a risk of a forward collision” which will help you to “avoid a collision or mitigate the effects of an impact”. 2 Not only does this include vehicles driving in front of you but pedestrians that step out into your lane as well! This feature will come in handy whether you are traveling on the highway or just driving through the local downtown streets. The feature will operate as long as you are traveling over 3 MPH.
How Does It Work?
Nissan uses a combination of radar sensors and a front-facing camera to be able to see what is going on in front of you. The radar sensors are used to not only see the vehicle directly in front of you but the vehicle in front of that vehicle. Here is a graphic that will help you to visualize what this looks like:

For example, say you are traveling in your brand new 2023 Nissan Rogue on your way to work one morning. You and the vehicle directly in front of you are cruising along in the fast lane of Ross Clark Circle. What would happen if someone cut over from the slow lane in front of the car in front of you? Would you always be able to see that and know to apply the brakes to avoid a collision or help reduce an impact? Not likely. That is where this piece of technology comes in handy. Those radars will be able to see that vehicle, send you an alert, and apply the brakes if needed before you even have time to react. These radar sensors are going to be able to detect vehicles, but the front-facing camera in your windshield is what is going to be able to detect pedestrians. Once the camera detects someone who is walking into your path, it will engage the alert and braking system just like the radars do.
Why Does It Benefit You?
Simply put, Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection give you peace of mind. It allows you to feel confident in your driving knowing that you or someone you love has an added layer of protection that comes standard on all 2023 models. (except Versa S model)
Some important things to note:
- “The radar sensor will not detect animals, obstacles in the roadway, or oncoming or crossing vehicles.” 1
- “The radar sensor may not detect vehicles ahead in certain weather, driving, and road conditions.” 1
- “When the system engages the brakes to slow the vehicle, the brake lights come on.” 1
- “If the cameras or sensors become blocked – for example, during bad weather or when covered by mud, dirt, snow, and/or ice – the “Front Sensor Blocked” message may appear. Or, if only the camera is blocked, the meter icon may flash. This is normal and not a problem. Cleaning or drying the area should remedy the issue.” 1 This message will show up on your dash and look like this:

Introducing Nissan Safety Shield 360
Hello everyone and welcome to Safety Saturdays at Bondy’s Nissan! My name is Breanna Bell, and I am one of the internet sales consultants here. My job at the dealership is to assist customers in any way that I can with their purchases and to make sure that they understand all of the amazing features of their vehicles. Being a current Nissan owner, I can provide you with knowledge and hands-on experience on how Nissan has made it their mission to protect you as a driver.

As your local Dothan Nissan dealer, we wanted to do a series on the latest safety technology that is standard on almost all models.* (not available on S model Versa) That includes all your favorites like the 2023 Nissan Altima, 2023 Nissan Rogue, 2023 Nissan Frontier, and many more. Since safety is an important part of a new car purchase for many of our customers, we wanted to have a place where you could go to find answers to all your questions.
During this series, we will explore the six safety technologies that Nissan refers to as the Safety Shield 360®. These features include Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, High Beam Assist, Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Warning, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, and Rear Automatic Braking. According to Nissan, they have strategically picked each of these features to work together to “help assist and protect the driver all the way around the vehicle – 360 degrees”1.

For the next few Saturdays, we will explore each safety feature, provide an easy-to-understand explanation, and tell you how it benefits you as a Nissan customer. Whether you are a current owner or someone exploring vehicles for your next purchase, these posts will give you a better understanding of the latest technologies available to you. If you have any additional questions, please call us at 334-794-6736 or come by and see the safety features in person.
Join us next week as we explore Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection!

Thanks Breanna!
